In recent years Lesotho has suffered with poor crop yields as a result of droughts, soil erosion and HIV/AIDS. As a result the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has been involved in providing emergency food supplies for up to 400,000 people in the country.
Growing Nations has been working with WFP to promote Conservation Agriculture and in 2007 farmers in the Tebellong area produced a surplus of 7 tonnes which was sold to WFP. In 2008 it is estimated that they will supply 30 tonnes. This not only saves WFP money with reduced transportation costs but also provides income and security to farmers.
